I always laughed when I saw the extra l ong versions of these because you can see the seam where the back end was welded on.

That’s how it is with all of t he vans of that era I think. I once saw a well seasoned Dodge Maxi Van that looked like it was extended with a harbor freight welder and some cutters.

I think when they redesigned it in 1992, the extended length version was built complete on the line instead of having the extension grafted on.

When I was a kid, my aunt had a “Trail Wagons” Econoline conversion, in the 80s when such a thing was trendy. It was cool, blue on blue with plush captains chairs etc. When I was a teen, my dad had a longer wheelbase 3rd gen cargo van as a hauler, no windows, I was a new driver and didn’t much care for that experience. Solid reliable vehicle anyway.

What I think is funny/interesting is that- except in the case of the extended E-350- every variant of the Transit is bigger than any E-Series van you could get from the factory.
plus it’s just over 9000 times more pleasant to drive.

D rove one of those for a number of years working in college - E150 extended box with the 4.9 6cyl, pretty sure it was an 84'. It was surprisingly easy to parallel park, but you really had to watch out in parking garages due to low ceilings and all that extra length when going up and down ramps.

I don’t doubt you, but that above is a 2000 and that extension does not look that flush.

Can confirm, these (and the Chevy Express) are easy to parallel park. I’d rather parallel park one of those than my F-150.

Something about that front end entices me.

Easily a much better ride. It’s more for appearances than anything.

I was talking about the Econoline, not the Dodge B-series. sorry for the confusion.

Ah, no worries. That makes sense seeing that the fourth gen started in 1992 (per wiki).

Growing up my parents had a 12 passenger econoline as the family vehicle, went everywhere in one of these

I have a weird love of conversion vans myself. They really don’t fit well with how I generally use vehicles, but I still want one.
The 70’s Street vans with murals and shag interior may be even better/less useful in my eyes. If this had side pipes and a porthole window near the back it would be perfect.

Indeed. When we occasionally rented cargo vans to pickup large collections for the archives, I was always disappointed when we got anything other than a Tr ansit. They were the only cargo vans that didn't drive like a relic from the dark ages.

Doesn’t even need to be a conversion van. Just any van in general. The front of these are what I love about them.

I think it’s a decent looking design. The facelift they received in ~1980 kept it looking modern through the decade.

Oh man, I'd love one of those. Would be a perfect music festival camping rig. Really doubt it would fit in my garage, if only someone did a Transit Connect conversion.
